Tired

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

I’m tired. Neither in a good way or bad. Just wore out. Combination of working hard, riding my motorcycle in heavy traffic while it’s hot, allergies, and all the parental duties that have to be done wether I am tired or not.

New version of WordPress

I just upgraded the version of wordpress that I am running. Let me know if you see any weirdness. :-)

No.

One of those chained thought paths took be back to a conversation I had some time ago.

Thinking of a person -> remember a conversation with this person -> remember conversation with similar topic with another person -> think of that person -> then think of another conversation-> etc…
It was mentioned recently in conversation by someone else other than me, that I “was a ho in high school”. Yep, I was. And well after too. I don’t consider myself a player. I’m not nor have I ever been out to sleep with every woman on the planet just for the sake of sleeping with them. I just learned early on that if there wasn’t a “No” or “Stop” (which, btw, are perfectly OK) then the answer was yes.

But I revealed in conversation with someone else some while ago, that “More women should have told me no.” I found the strength of that much more attractive.

What if…

Reading this post made me think.
For some reason my friends, even my best friends, are scattered far across the planet. So when I get the chance to spend time with them I try to make the most of it. Because of the one “what if” that haunts me the most “What if we never cross paths again?”

But there are a lot of other what if moments. Most are just passing thoughts. But to think that I may never see someone again who has had a large impact on my life sometimes bothers me.

My Cover Letter

Monday, May 21st, 2007

I’ve sent two different cover letters over the years.

My Standard Cover letter:
“You should hire me because I’ve worked on some of the largest software engineering projects in the world.”
The cover letter I customized for a popular search engine company:
“You should hire me because I have a Google Dilbert mug. I’ve also worked on some of the largest software engineering projects in the world.”

I’ve never failed to get an interview. Granted my resume lists summaries of the projects I’ve worked on to back up that statement, but I think my cover letter is what gets them interested.

What do I want?

Sunday, May 13th, 2007

Today I had the realization that the statement “I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up.” is no longer true. A better statement would be “What can I do to buy the toys I want so I don’t have to grow up.”

And the are some expensive toys.

  • A two story house with a view of the lake on an acre of land. A deck, a hot tub, a Five car garage, a separate dining room and kitchen, a shop, a guest house, a basically a small mansion. Estimated to be around $2 million right now.
  • A 40 foot Fountain boat. ($400k)
  • A Ford GT ($?)
  • 1956 Ford F100 ($varies)
  • 1969 Mach I Mustang ($varies)
  • BMW M6 ($110k)
  • Money to fly anywhere in the world, anytime. Better yet, first class all the time.
  • A ski boat.
  • Jet Skis
  • Dirt bikes
  • A big screen TV (maybe 2, gotta have one for the master bedroom)
  • A lot of stuff I haven’t seen yet.

That’s not to say I’m not happy. I could live without any of those things. But it sure would be nice… :-)

A little fun with image transforms

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

Sorry for no posts lately. Been quite busy. I’m back in that mode where I get my fill of computers during the day. I’ve also got quite a bit going on outside of work.

But I still manage to stumble on something kind of fun once in a while. The link takes you to an image transformation page that takes a picture you upload and lets you see what you may look like either of a different race or if you had your portrait done by an artist.

Review of my first two days on the job

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

My impression of my new employer was already high from what I had read, researched, and experienced in the interviews. But still I did not know what to expect.

My first day I showed up at the scheduled 10am to meet with my now coworker. He’s a very nice guy and a personal friend of the founders of the company. But, while he is a Configuration Manager (CM) the job is now at a point that he cannot handle it alone. The only drawback so far to working with him is that he doesn’t want to overwhelm me. He is approaching my training as though I am new to this. I’ve been gently trying to nudge him into giving me more information at a faster rate. I’m used to trying to drink from a fire hose. I do best under that pressure.

What I am really excited about is that the current system is incomplete. It was not put together by a build engineer. It was cobbled together by several people putting small tools in here and there to patch things up as minimally as possible. There is enough work here to keep me busy for a long time to come. I’ve got a page full of notes and questions just from the last couple of hours of reviewing the last bit of information I got today.

A very gratifying moment came yesterday when I was talking with the CTO (Chief Technical Officer) and co-founder of the company when I heard my name shouted out. It was Joe who I had worked with about 5 years ago. When I told him what I was doing there he looked at the CTO and said “Jesse’s the MAN when it comes to this stuff!”. Can’t get any higher praise than that.

I’m working on a very cool technology. I’m doing something I am good at. I am working with great people. I’m also working with someone who I enjoyed working with in the past. I have a great challenge with lots of accomplishment in down the road.

It’s been a long time since I’ve been this excited.
